Ray P. Authement College of Sciences Early Career Faculty Mentoring Program

The Ray P. Authement College of Sciences provides mentoring support to our early career tenure-track faculty through mentoring sessions, at the College and Departmental levels, to help them accomplish their goals. The main objective of this mentoring is to provide awareness about research, teaching, and service expectations from the faculty during their probationary period and, very importantly, the support and guidance available to the faculty across multiple offices within the University. Typically, we will host two College level mentoring sessions each semester. Mentoring sessions for early career faculty will vary at the departmental level. These Department level session will include, but are not limited to, individual sessions with department head and senior faculty, and yearly feedback from the department head.

Strengthening the Broader Impacts section of NSF grants through outreach and service: A Panel Discussion

The panel discussion helped our early career faculty members gain a better understanding of the full scope of what the Broader Impacts section of an NSF grant looks like and why it is important for the success of a proposal. It is hoped that this discussion, as well as follow-up discussions among the participants, will help the faculty proceed successfully with their own vision of outreach. The senses in which service learning events can be considered a part of the broader impacts of a proposal, e.g., if the faculty and students supported will be doing outreach or service that benefits society or seeks to broaden inclusion of underrepresented groups in Science and Technology, were also discussed.

The panelists also provided information about several of the well established outreach and support programs provided at the university. These include the TRIO, LAMP, and McNair Scholars programs. Visit this Department of Special Services page form more information about these programs.

A working lunch was provided. (Attendance was limited to the early career faculty who received invitations.)
