Mathematics Faculty Earn National Recognition with Recent NSF Research Awards

The Department of Mathematics in the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences continues to demonstrate the strength and diversity of its research enterprise, with two faculty members recently receiving support from the National Science Foundation.

Recent NSF awards to Dr. Leonel Robert González, Professor of Mathematics, and Dr. Azmy S. Ackleh, Dean of the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences and Professor of Mathematics, highlight the broad impact of mathematical research at UL Lafayette. Together, their accomplishments represent research spanning fundamental questions in pure mathematics and interdisciplinary applications of mathematics to complex biological and ecological systems.

Dr. Leonel Robert González Advances Research in Pure Mathematics

Dr. Leonel Robert González has received NSF support for his continuing research in mathematics, providing further recognition of his valuable contributions to the field of operator algebras. His most recent grant NSF grant concerns “Selfless C*-algebras, C*-linear groups, and classification”.

Dr. Robert's research focuses on deep mathematical questions involving operator algebras and related areas, including C*-algebras, K-theory, the Cuntz semigroup, and Hilbert C*-modules. These areas explore the structure and classification of sophisticated mathematical systems and contribute to a broader understanding of fundamental mathematical principles.

Research in pure mathematics often addresses foundational questions whose significance extends far beyond their immediate applications. The theories and mathematical structures developed through this work can ultimately influence other areas of mathematics, theoretical physics, computing, and scientific research.

Dean Azmy S. Ackleh Receives NSF Support for Mathematical Research in Biology and Ecology

The Mathematics Department's recent successes with NSF funding also includes an award to Dr. Azmy S. Ackleh, Dean of the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences, Professor of Mathematics, and the R.P. Authement Endowed Chair and Eminent Scholar in Computational Mathematics. While providing leadership for the College, Dean Ackleh continues to maintain an active and nationally recognized research program in mathematical biology, ecology, and epidemiology. His most recent grant NSF grant concerns “Coexistence of competing structured populations: delineating mechanisms of niche differentiation.”

Dean Ackleh's research uses mathematical modeling, computational methods, and advanced mathematical analysis to better understand complex biological and ecological systems. Through deterministic and stochastic mathematical models, his work examines important questions involving population dynamics, disease transmission, invasive species, and other biological phenomena.

Mathematical models provide powerful tools for studying systems that may be difficult to observe or analyze through traditional experimental approaches alone. By combining mathematic concepts and methodology with biological and ecological research, Dean Ackleh and his collaborators are able to investigate how populations change over time, evaluate the effects of environmental conditions, and develop models that help predict possible future outcomes.

His work incorporates a variety of mathematical and computational approaches, including differential equations, difference equations, stochastic processes, Markov chain models, numerical analysis, and computational modeling.
