Our New Applied Computing and Information Sciences Ph.D. program
Fri, 02/13/2026 - 9:56amOur School of Computing and Informatics just launched a novel Ph.D. program in applied computing and information sciences. This is the first Ph.D. of its kind in the state!
This multidisciplinary program emphasizes the practical application of computing technologies, including artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity and machine learning, with a focus on organizational and business contexts. The curriculum is tailored to prepare students to make strategic, research-based leadership decisions and improve business efficiency.
“Unlike programs that focus solely on computer science or computer engineering, the applied computing and information sciences program examines technology from a user’s perspective — how people interact with systems and how information moves through organizations,” according to Dean Azmy S. Ackleh.
This is also the University’s first Ph.D. program with an online delivery, enabling students to enroll from anywhere in the country while maintaining their careers in the field. Dean Mary Farmer-Kaiser, dean of the Graduate School, stressed that the online delivery is particularly valuable in helping meet growing workforce demands.
Grounded in a user-centered and interdisciplinary approach, the Ph.D. in Applied Computing and Information Sciences will prepare you to lead innovation in computing, information technologies, and artificial intelligence—particularly at the intersection of people, organizations, and systems.
Unlike a master’s degree, which focuses on the application of existing knowledge, this Ph.D. program emphasizes original research that contributes new knowledge and best practices to a broad range of fields—ultimately shaping how information systems are designed, taught, and managed. Distinct from traditional computer science programs, which often focus on theory and formal methods, this applied computing degree is deeply connected to real-world organizational needs and user-centered solutions. Applicants may enter the program with either a completed bachelor’s degree or with prior master’s-level coursework.
Applications for the program are now being accepted. Both on campus and online courses will be offered beginning with the Fall 2026 semester. Please visit this Graduate School web page to learn more about or to apply for admission to this Ph.D. program.
