On Saturday 8 June 2024 representatives of the UL Lafayette School of Geosciences hosted STEM Saturday: Fossil Fun! at the Lafayette Science Museum. This event was a great success!

Dr. Jennifer Hargrave (Museum Director and Geology Professor) and Caitlyn Mullis (geology undergraduate student) provided several hands on activities through which museum visitors learned about fossils. This STEM Saturday coincided with the Museums "Summer of Science" kickoff and the opening of the newest exhibit "Prehistoric Louisiana: A Journey through Ice Age Acadiana." The exhibit includes interactive elements, including bone puzzles and a fossil dig pit! Visitors uncovered fossils in the dig pit (a permanent activity in the new exhibit), reconstructed a fossil horse leg (a permanent activity in the new exhibit), and tried their hand at identifying fossils.

Visitors use a fossil matching activity to identify common fossils.

Visitors explore the dig pit to see what fossils they can uncover.

Visitors try their hand at paleontology by reconstructing a fossil horse leg. These 3D prints are courtesy of Dr. Cline in the UL Lafayette School of Architecture and Design.

The new exhibit highlights fossils found in Acadiana. Come see what giants lived here during the last Ice Age!
