You have almost certainly encountered fascinating images and videos of deep sea creatures. If you found these intriguing, then you will want to listen to the NPR podcast, featuring our own Craig McClain, at this link.

Craig McClain is a professor in our school of biological sciences. Follow this link to the McClain Lab web page to learn more about his research.

Here's a little teaser to whet your appetite. The NPR Shortwave Sea Camp podcast mentioned above is devoted to a discussion of the presence of giant creatures in the deep ocean, in particular in the bathypelagic zone of the ocean which is 1,000 to 4,000 meters below the surface. Typically, animals in this zone are much smaller than their shallow-water counterparts. But occasionally, researchers find the rare deep sea giant: giant isopods, giant squids, colossal squids, sea spiders. While these giants sound like the subjects of some people's nightmares, deep sea biologist Craig McClain dreams about them. Please follow this link and listen to the podcast!
