Faculty Spotlight: Bhupendra Acharya

Bhupendra Acharya, Ph.D., joined the School of Computing and Informatics at the University of Louisiana as an assistant professor in August of 2025. He received his Ph.D., concentrating in cybersecurity, from the University of New Orleans in 2022. His Ph.D., research primarily focused on the areas of Phishing, Web Security Crawlers, Browser Fingerprinting, and building tools for large-scale measurement using honeypots. Following his PhD, he spent 2.5 years as a postdoc at CISPA, Germany, where he primarily focused on tracking fraudulent accounts on web and social media platforms, studying the modus operandi of scams, and analyzing how fraudsters attempt to obtain sensitive information from users or trick them into surrendering their credentials and private secrets. During this postdoctoral period, he not only identified and reported thousands of fraudulent social media accounts, hundreds of scamming payment methods such as PayPal, and fraudulent cryptocurrency addresses. He also collaborated with industry partners including PayPal, X (formerly known as Twitter), Chainabuse, and others to establish mitigation mechanisms to potentially preventing large number of future attacks on users.

Whenever asked, "What do you do for a living?" he often jokes, saying, "I am the conner of the con artist.” More seriously, Dr. Acharya brings with him the experience of both an applied engineer and a researcher, having spent 7 years as an engineer at companies such as Amazon and others prior to his Ph.D. To prepare the next generation of researchers and professionals; he envisions applying theoretical knowledge culminating with research through a practical teaching model in his classes. He welcomes discussions on how to make the web a safer place and how to protect users and online brands from various cyberattacks. He and his research group are currently exploring the development of next-generation AI-based framework to combat internet cybercrimes.
