Faculty Spotlight: Sercan Aygün

Sercan Aygün, PhD joined the School of Computing and Informatics at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as an assistant professor in August 2024. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette between 2022 and 2024. He earned his PhD in Electronics Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, in 2022. Dr. Aygün holds dual Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Electronics and Computer Engineering, Master's degrees from Istanbul Technical University and Anadolu University, and undergraduate degrees from Eskisehir Osmangazi University. Dr. Aygün has ten years of research and teaching experience at Yildiz Technical University.

His research interests span hardware design, embedded systems, and software systems, focusing on tiny machine learning systems that prioritize low power consumption and accuracy-efficient designs using emerging computing. During his PhD, Dr. Aygün worked on stochastic computing system design and later focused on hyperdimensional computing in his postdoctoral studies. During his doctoral dissertation, he also undertook year-long research visits to laboratories in Belgium (ICTEAM) and the U.S. (ECT Lab.). Dr. Aygün aims to revolutionize lightweight machine learning systems using unconventional computing paradigms, particularly through synergistic approaches that combine stochastic and hyperdimensional computing.

In recognition of his research, Dr. Aygün has received numerous awards, including the Best Scientific Research Award at the ACM SIGBED Student Research Competition (SRC) at ESWEEK 2022, the Best Paper Award at GLSVLSI 2023, and the Best Poster Award at GLSVLSI 2024. His PhD research also earned the Best Scientific Application PhD Award from the Turkish Electronic Manufacturers Association. An active journal reviewer, Dr. Aygün has completed over 300 certified reviews for top journals and conferences such as IEEE TVLSI, TC, TCAD, TCAS-I, TCAS-II, TBioCAS, TETC, TII, ESL, CAL, Access, Sensors, also DATE, DAC, ASP-DAC and ICCAD. He was recognized as the Best Reviewer by IEEE JETCAS in 2022. In 2023, Dr. Aygün was named a Rising Star in Machine Learning and Systems by MLCommons and now serves on the organizing committee for outreach and engagement activities. Dr. Aygün leads the tiny Machine Learning and Embedded Computing (tML-EC) Laboratory at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This laboratory focuses on lightweight system design for both software and hardware platforms. His lab aims to transform hardware-efficient learning systems using emerging and synergistic computing paradigms.
