Table of Contents

Summary

The present-day Department of Biology at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette originated in the late 1980s, with the merger of the biology and microbiology departments. In the spring semester of 2015, the Department of Biology consists of 22 professorial faculty members, 3 emeritus faculty members, and 7 instructors. Almost all of the professorial faculty members are active in research and 23 of our faculty serve as graduate faculty. Our graduate programs are supported by the graduate faculty as well as by 14 adjunct faculty members; their affiliations include the United States Geological Survey, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Smithsonian Institution.

In this report, research accomplishments are summarized for our departmental faculty since 2009. The report focuses on departmental research strengths; however, many faculty members have also been awarded honors and funding for educational activities. We here briefly summarize the current size and recent growth of degree programs in biology.

Grant productivity:

Since 2009 the Department of Biology has secured over 16.5 million dollars of new funding to support research, instructional activities and research and teaching infrastructure. The total number of dollars associated with these grants, which are often multi-institutional, is considerably higher.

Publications:

The faculty has a strong record of publication, with 329 papers published in peer-reviewed journals since 2009. An additional 63 papers were published in conference proceedings or other edited volumes.

Other accomplishments:

Other notable accomplishments since 2009 include faculty authorship of two books and five edited volumes. Faculty members served as editors, associate editors, or editorial board members for 24 different journals or as members of 26 society boards or grant review panels. They presented 184 of presentations as keynote addresses or invited seminars.

Degree program enrollments:

Since 2002 and the implementation of selective admissions, enrollment in the undergraduate biology major has grown steadily. With 753 majors in fall semester of 2014 (not including students in the pre-vet and med-tech transfer programs), biology is one of the largest majors offered in the University.

The Department of Biology offers a Ph.D. program in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology (established in 1983), and a M.S. program in Biology (with a recently-added non-thesis track). In fall semester of 2014, a total of 21 M.S. students were enrolled in the program, which has had a relatively stable enrollment for several years. Enrollment in the Ph.D. program has grown fairly steadily, with 53 students enrolled in the fall semester of 2014.

Since 1982, the year our doctoral program was approved by the Louisiana Board of Regents, a total 116 doctoral students earned their doctorate degrees (to 2014). It is the only doctoral program offered at a public university focused on Ecology and Evolution and is the second largest biology doctoral program in the State of Louisiana. From 2009-2014, a total of 40 students earned doctorate degrees in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology. During the same time period, 48 students earned MS degrees.
